The Digital “Dorpsbode” on the Dutch Isle of Terschelling has several interesting articles.
This one is about Master Jan Eise Hellings who’s ship “Moena” was anchored next to Abbekerk in Londons Victoria Dock when they were bombed in september 1940. He helps putting out the fires burning on Abbekerk.
Later his ship the “Poelau Tello” is bombed and sunk in Padang (Netherlands East Indies) in januari 1941 and he and his crew try to escape Tjjilatjap (Java) aboard “Poelau Bras” on 6 march 1942. This ship, packed with refugees, is sunk Japanese bombers, killing at least 128 people. The survivors are later captured and taken to prisonercamps. Jan Eise was one of the 128 that were killed in the attack.
